NTU beats NUS in university international rankings

The age old battle to see who ranks higher in university international rankings has seen NTU (Nanyang Technological University) beating NUS (National University of Singapore).

This morning, the QS – Quacquarelli Symonds (how do you even pronounce that anyway…) World University Rankings showed NTU moved up 2 places to 11th place while NUS fell to 15th position. SMU (Singapore Management University) is ranked in the 441-450 category (Don’t worry lar…every school is a good school).

QS uses six metrics to rank the universities including employer reputation and citations per faculty.

While NUS has higher overall research output and citations impact, NTU scored higher because of how QS assesses research impact.

NTU also has fewer faculty members. 4,300 compared to 5,100 at NUS, which resulted in a higher citations-per-faculty score.

According to QS, “this disparity is the primary driver of NTU’s success this year…universities with a heavy technological focus have made consistent improvements and, in many cases, are gaining ground”.
