In an article by Straits Times, 23 women and a ‘ah kua’ were arrested for their alleged involvement in vice activities on Wednesday (May 17, 2017) at Jalan Besar Road.

It was close to 5am, all was quiet, save for a flurry of activity in the lobby of a hotel.

A police raid was underway.

As a few plainclothes officers stood at its reception checking the guest list, others were seen interviewing customers while the remaining combed through most of its 70 rooms.

A distant thumping of doors could be heard coming from the upper floors.

More than an hour later, 23 women and a man were arrested, under the Women’s Charter.

The women are believed to be sex workers. Aged between 20 and 33, and are mostly Thai nationals.

Condoms and lubricant were among the items found in the rooms.Some of those nabbed were believed to be with their clients when the authorities arrived.

There were also signs of forced entry on at least one door, following the 6.5-hour police raid involving 36 officers.

The 24 people caught were led out of the four-storey hotel at close to 6.30am, and taken away in four unmarked vehicles.
